History of Khayelitsha

Khayelitsha, which means New Home, was built in the early 1980’s as part of the Apartheid Government’s attempt at controlling the growth of the black population in Cape Town. Forming part of the Group Areas Act, black people were forcibly relocated to Khayelitsha township. Today the area houses more than 500 000 people and though one of the poorest communities in Cape Town, it is known for its entrepreneurial spirit and vibrant culture.

Sheikh Yusuf of Macassar is considered the father of Islam at the Cape. A man of noble birth, he was exiled to the Cape and his political and spiritual influence
necessitated that he be settled outside of Cape Town at Zandvliet. His life and teachings are celebrated across cultures and his final resting place, on a hill overlooking Macassar at Faure is visited by people from around the globe.
